It has been so lovingly made by his brother that I wondered if there were any relatives ‘out there’ who would be interested ROTHON-Rifleman-WALTER FRANK SYDNEY-631556-"C" Coy. 1st/21st Bn.-lon 21 First Surrey Rifles--15/09/1916-19-Son of Mrs. C. Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 5 April , 2019 Share Posted 5 April , 2019 His mother was Cecilia (nee Cooper). He seems to have been the youngest son of her marriage to James George Rothon (m.1880). There doesn't seem to have been a brother called Michael. The (?paper ?fabric) label including what looks like Arial Bold font does seem rather modern to my eyes and makes it look a little suspicious. As do the spelling mistakes, and strange mix of capitals and lower case at the beginning of each word.
bobpike Posted 7 April , 2019 Author Share Posted 7 April , 2019 Dai Thank you for your comments. I assumed the brother was nick-named 'Mick' hence the inverted commas. Also the inscription 'IN FONDEST...ETC is typed on separate lines hence the mistakes perhaps, like me a one-fingered typist What strikes me is the care taken in producing it by someone not naturally skilled - Hard Wood chosen; a tin poppy carved and painted, it's very moving Bob
