busterfield Posted 4 April , 2019 Share Posted 4 April , 2019 Looking at the regimental history of IR 53: http://digital.wlb-stuttgart.de/sammlungen/sammlungsliste/werksansicht/?id=6&tx_dlf[id]=8609&tx_dlf =111 for 21st of March 1918 I'm trying to find a few trenches. Which to me look like Voltaire trench and LLoyd George trench. Earlier in the morning they had captured Londoner trench. From what I can make out their attack took them to Savy and then up to Holnon. I've had a good(?) look at map 62B.SW from Dec 1917 and Feb 1918 and cannot find any of those names mentioned.
charlie2 Posted 4 April , 2019 Share Posted 4 April , 2019 You won‘t find the names on an british trench map, they are the German names for the english trenches. If I recall correctly IR53 was on the left flank of the 50.ID and advanced south of Margarin Höhe (Manchester Hill). It did not attack Holnon but the Holnon Line. The approximate position of the trenches are marked on this sketch map. Charlie
busterfield Posted 4 April , 2019 Author Share Posted 4 April , 2019 Thanks for that Charlie. After banging my head against the proverbial brick wall I did try searching for German maps or drawings regarding the 50th division. Buster
