Rory Stephens Posted 2 April , 2019 Share Posted 2 April , 2019 Hi I am on my way out to the Battlefields this weekend trying to follow in the footsteps of a soldier in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Lieutenant Maurice Raymond Neville was awarded an MC as F.O.O for his battery in May/June 1918. The 236 Battery were in 18th Brigade and the War Diary for May states that they were at Hoograf. I have searched through the forum for references to Hoograaf, and there apppears to have been a camp there, but no reference to where Hoograf itself was. I would be grateful for any help locating Hoograaf. Many thanks Rory
brianmorris547 Posted 2 April , 2019 Share Posted 2 April , 2019 (edited) Rory There are references on Google to Hoograaf as the 1 Anzac Corps HQ and photographs of German prisoners in the compound there. There is also a map in Images which shows Hoograf Stone Sidings in Square 26. Please see this NLS map 28 NW corrected to 15/05/1918 https://maps.nls.uk/view/101464900 The Square in G 26 has a railway and something marked which may be Hoograaf and the roads look similar to the map on Google. It's the best I can find. Brian EDIT: This is the area on the 1:20 000 IGN Poperinge - Leper No 28 (1-2). KernelPanic Posted 2 April , 2019 Share Posted 2 April , 2019 (edited) Hooggraaf is in G26 Sheet 28 of this 1917 1:40K map from McMaster. I think it corresponds to the Y junction just north of Brabant on Brian's map. Brabant is not marked on the 1917 map. The railway on the 1918 map is not there on this 1917 map. I noticed the name because it shows up in the 50th Divisional Train diary for 1915. I'm researching this area because it's where my GGF served in the ASC HT during 1915. Rory Stephens Posted 2 April , 2019 Author Share Posted 2 April , 2019 Brian this map and the link are fantastic thank you. It’s really useful to have the modern day map to help me find the spot. Top stuff Rory
Rory Stephens Posted 2 April , 2019 Author Share Posted 2 April , 2019 Thanks KernelPanic - what can I say? Both maps are perfect, thank you. This will really help me get on the spot on Sunday. We also share a connection with the 50th Division. My Great Grandfather was a machine gunner in the 50th Battalion in that Division in 1918. Many thanks for your efforts Rory
zijde26 Posted 9 April , 2019 Share Posted 9 April , 2019 Does anyone have a photograph of the " Hooggraaf " area ? I do think that the " Hooggraaf " area did have a mill and is situated on the Westouter area. Gilbert
