Group Photo - Sailors & unknown Building

Recommended Posts

Repulse II

Hi, folks.

I've inherited this photo from my father's side of the family.  His father joined the Navy in 1911 at HMS Pembroke (my avatar).

He's not in this photo so not sure why he had it or where the scene is.  Any help would be appreciated.  It was in appalling condition, so have cleaned it up best I can.

Many thanks!

They all appear to be medical branch, red cross badge on upper right arm, so it is probably a RN medical facility somewhere.

If only we had an expert in that field at hand.

I can't immediately place it but I've seen that portico at the right somewhere.

I'm also fairly sure I've seen that gateway at the left. Hmmmm.

Flummoxed at the moment despite trying several options. I'll show this to some colleagues tomorrow if I may.

Do you want the good news or the other news? :D

1. The setting is Duncraig Castle, Plockton.

2. It was requisitioned for use as a naval hospital in - 1939. (Which would account for why the older men are wearing GW medals, I suppose.)

Well done to my colleague Helen, who is a volunteer curator for the QARNNS archive and who remembered, this morning, where it was, without having been able to check her records.

I'd suggest your grandfather might not be in the picture because he was the one holding the camera, but it doesn't necessarily follow.

Very many thanks!  Much appreciated.

A mystery half solved!

Your colleague Helen, would her archive include QAIMNS personnel?

No, just QARNNS and Naval VADs.

Somebody here should be able to help with QAIMNS:   https://www.qaranc.co.uk/qaimns.php

or
