Sullivan Posted 27 January , 2005 Share Posted 27 January , 2005 Can anyone assist with information on the following. R.S.M. W. Callaghan, M.C., D.C.M., regimental number 7661, 1st Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers. His M.C. was gazetted 1 January 1917, however the history of the RMF by Capt. S. McCance, apart from a photo of Callaghan, makes no mention of this person, and I have not been successful in finding reference to his citation. The photo caption spells his surname Callaghan, however the index of volume two of the history spells it O'Callaghan. Thanking you all in advance. James O'Sullivan. Gary Samson Posted 27 January , 2005 Share Posted 27 January , 2005 No problem finding his DCM citation on 16 May 1916 but no luck so far with the MC. 7661 Sjt.-Maj. W. Callaghan, 1st Bn., R. Muns. Fus. For conspicuous devotion to duty. He refused to go to hospital when wounded, and on three other occasions remained at his duty when sick. He has set a fine and gallant example. curranl Posted 28 January , 2005 Share Posted 28 January , 2005 Hello James, I had a look through my material, but didn't find anything on your man. Was he aboard the River Clyde and did he survive? Well done on the website, by the way. If my memeory serves me right, some researcher from Limerick did either a Masters or PhD on the Munster Fusiliers a few years back. Regards, Liam. John_Hartley Posted 28 January , 2005 Share Posted 28 January , 2005 Wasn't the MC only awarded to officers, not NCOs? Assuming he got an MC, then he may not have been commissioned into the Munsters. Could that be the answer? John
Gary Samson Posted 28 January , 2005 Share Posted 28 January , 2005 John, According to William Spencer's Army Service Records of the First World War the MC was awarded to officers of the rank of captain and below, and warrant officers (which would include RSM). John_Hartley Posted 28 January , 2005 Share Posted 28 January , 2005 Gary Thanks for the correction. I'd only ever seen an MC with an officer. However, I think I'll make this my first and last time that I try and answer a medal query John
