Jim Strawbridge Posted 27 January , 2005 Share Posted 27 January , 2005 Gertrude Winifred Allam Dyer was born in 1880 in Maindee, Newport, Monmouthshire. She was the daughter of Frederick and Sarah Dyer of 14, Richmond Road, Newport. She enrolled with the Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps as a Worker and was allocated the service number 2732. She died on the 27th January 1918 and is buried in the Christchurch Cemetery (plot B3, Border 6) Newport.
Guest Pete Wood Posted 27 January , 2005 Share Posted 27 January , 2005 Maindee was (and still is, I believe) one of the better suburbs of Newport - and Christchurch even nicer. The cemetery is massive, and on top of a hill with some of the most beautiful views of the South Wales countryside. The Christchurch war memorial is just a few hundred yards east of the cemetery (I wonder if Dyer is on this), on a small 'island' next to a cosy pub - the name of which I forget; I had my first (I was under-age) beer in there. In the summer, people sit around the memorial.
