Remembered Today:

“Please Park Camels away from R.W.S.”

Can any one enlighten me as to as to what the R.W.S. might have been that the camels were supposed to be parked away from as per the pencilled note at the bottom of the attached message that was included with the 1916 Egypt War diary of the 1/2 East Lancashire R.F.A Brigade?

It’s puzzling me.

Could be I guess - perhaps camels were over keen train spotters?

Did the soldiers scare the camels, or vice versa?

I can't help I'm afraid, but in my younger days I spent some in the the Trucial  Oman States (now the UAE)  living alongside  arab tribesmen. One morning I woke up in my tent to a loud and smelly snort. I shot up to find that a nomad had parked (hobbled) his camel just outside overnight.  The beast had brown cow-like eyes with long lashes and very large  sloppy lips which were slobbering over my head.    I seemed to be determined to lick something - I was equally determined it wasn't going to be me.

I fully understand why the order for the camels  to be parked away from RWS was made.

Could R.W.S stand for Regimental Water Supply?

This is only  a guess.

I imagine someone could have got into a lot of trouble by moving the camels from next to the railway station.... only to put them next to the regimental water supply, which they promptly down in one.

"But sir, I thought you meant...."

Like something out of Dad's Army.

A TEL quote...

The first time the camels heard the bagpipes they stampeded.  Highland regiments and camels did not get on.”
