Remembered Today:

Lieut Howard Devine, 50th Can.Inf. MID?

Hi All,

Clayton Howard De Vine enlisted into the Canadian Infantry in 1914 and eventually went to France in August, 1916, as 434557 Sgt Howard Devine, 50th Can.Inf.  He was promoted to CSM on 27/10/16 and finally commissioned in the field on 7th May, 1917.  He was then killed in action whilst leading his men in an attack on 3rd June, 1917, still serving with the 50th Can.Inf.

In his write up in the Marquis de Ruvigny Roll of Honour it mentions that he was twice mentioned in despatches 'for distinguished service in the field'  but gives no indication as to the London Gazette dates and I can also find no mention of these awards in his on-line WW1 service papers.

I wonder if anyone can confirm or otherwise that he was infact MID, either as 434557 Sgt/CSM H.Devine, 50th Can Inf or later as Lieut H.Devine, 50th Can Inf.

Any help or comments much appreciated,

TIA,  Robert

Odd that "50th Canadian Infantry" scores no hits in the London Gazette 1914-1919.  Other battalions occur regularly in the 1229 times "Canadian Infantry" comes up.  Could there have been some admin screw up in submission to LG from the Canadian Corps?  Or is de Ruvigny wrong?

Hi Max,

That is very strange indeed as the 50th Bn.Can.Inf. had one VC awarded to Pte John George Pattison for Vimy on 10th April, 1917.  Coincidentally Pattison was killed in action on the same day as Lieut Howard Devine, 3rd June,1917.

Many thanks for your interest,

Robert

There is no listing for him as "De Vine" or "Devine" in Michael Maton's "Honour Those Mentioned in The Great War", Mentions in Despatches 1914 - 1920.

Many thanks Harry--looks like the information is incorrect in the Marquis de Ruvigny roll then--many thanks for your efforts.
