I just got this GEW88 last night and wanted a bit of help deciphering the unit on the barrel band. Looked for some info and found this amazing forum. Didn't know it even existed but am a huge WW1 fan, so I look forward to using this forum regularly.

Hello!

is there a crown-stamp in the regimental stamp after the 3?

Normally it means 3.Garde-Grenadier-Regiment, 12th company, weapon number 205

No. I just couldn´t recognize it clearly...

The crown seems to be a "Abnehmer-Stempel" (inspection-stamp)

Awesome. I googled it and got the Königin Elisabeth Garde-Grenadier-Regiment nr.3, did some reading, in Jan 1919 the Garde-Grenadier-Regiment nr3 was formed as a volunteer division. Pretty cool stuff! If you know if that information is true, please do let me know.

Well, the Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr.3 "Königin Elisabeth"  was formed May 5, 1860. Garrison Berlin-Charlottenburg. It fought 1864 against Denmark, 1866 against Austria and 70/71 against France.

In WW1 under command of 2nd and 1st Garde-Infanterie-Division.

Dissolved December 13, 1918. January 1919 it formed a volunteer-detachement (Freiwilligen-Abteilung Garde-Gren.Rgt.3; also called "Freiwilligen-Kompagnie Elisabeth").

Here two photos of that regiment:

Great stuff as usual from the Prussian! Never seen a unit marking go around a crowned inspection letter before though!

Probably the crown was stamped later
