Hello

i am trying to find photos of my great grandfather who served in the 32nd Lancers up until his death in 1917. His name is William Walter Gilbert Griffith. I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction to find some photos of him and the men he served with.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Mr Simon Gardiner

Have a chat with Kimberley John Lindsay of this forum. He seems to have a selection of 32 Lancers photos at the moment. See his recent posts

Dear All, and Tejpal Singh & Simon Gardiner,

I feel flattered to receive so much attention!

Yes, I researched, en passant, the 32nd Lancers, but only as much as this concerned the gallant and capable Capt Frances Denehy, who was Mentioned in Despatches for Mesopotamia, won the Military Cross post-1918 for Kurdistan, and was Mentioned in Despatches for Iraq.

David Rao kindly beamed me 32nd Lancers photos, and I am sure he would like to see them serve this purpose, too: namely to give an idea of the 32nd Lancers daily duties...

Named photos are sadly all but non-existant (they were on Active Service and too busy545091975_2DabidRaoscan.jpeg.36338666a801c48f2b50a6094a4d8084.jpeg224144800_3DavidRaoscan.jpeg.672fc05d6410f8c0b98fc293b9406f72.jpeg1289660059_4DavidRaoscan.jpeg.3a2230da31410adbb0c35a714b55cc79.jpeg1757376860_10DavidRaoscan.Denehynotpresent.jpeg.6bf082d347030a87276ed7561470c0f8.jpeg1811982184_12DavidRaoscan.jpeg.ad2d7293ae7ba07fa1656b3e270a221d.jpeg1792735244_13DavidRaoscan32LancersoffrsDenehyHussain.jpeg.146ea0460c1d50707902e73bf6765e07.jpeg1377583263_MajorReid32Lancers1919.jpg.ad2334e729de24f626e3b93775c9c162.jpg579975962_14DavidRaoscan.jpeg.da776b1df377fa6608bbd609a2b8b85c.jpeg837359708_15DavidRaoscan32Lancersprobably.jpeg.5feff153e1a35c070a7fafe9c3af174b.jpeg).

Kindest regards,

Dear Tejpal Singh,

The documents for your great grandfather are a fine testimony of his sterling service to the Indian Army.

Thank you for posting them on the Great War Forum.

I regret that - apart from the 32nd Lancers photos (for which thanks to David Rao) - I am unable to provide the elusive portrait of the Risaldar-Major, a highly-respected position...

Kindest regards,

Kim.

Did he serve in the 21st Prince Albert's Own Cavalry (Daly's Horse) at all? There is a 1913 photo here https://sikhhistoryblog.blogspot.com/2016/08/kings-orderly-officers-1913.html

Quite possibly not your Thakur Singh though.

However the British Film Institute has a film of the Prince of Wales touring India in 1905 - the time your ancestor was his ADC - he might appear in this, so possibly worth contacting them about it? http://colonialfilm.org.uk/node/4544

It may also be useful to contact the University of Cambridge Centre for Asian Studies as they hold a large number of photographs and films https://www.s-asian.cam.ac.uk/archive/

Good luck with your search

David

It is great to see all those copies of documentation of his service. Thank you Tejpal Singh. I've tried looking in IA Lists of War Services but found nothing for WW1.

I presume he retired 1920. Or is that the date of honorary British Rank ?
