George Rayner Posted 20 March , 2019 Share Posted 20 March , 2019 (edited) Welcome to the forum... On Ancestry his Soldiers effects merely states died in Belgium in action with, I think SW-which I do not know what it means Two days previous to his reported death 8th Battalion had been in battle of Ypres along Menin Road and on 24th had been pushed back by strong German attack to starting point George Edited 20 March , 2019 by George Rayner

George Rayner Posted 20 March , 2019 Share Posted 20 March , 2019 That could be a very good call. Quite new to this and not come across it before. Thanks George
Mark1959 Posted 20 March , 2019 Share Posted 20 March , 2019 Don’t see SW on the Effects records just “in action Belgium” No indication died of wounds. No known grave. Unlikely to find what killed him unless you kind find a statement from someone who was present. The War Diary records that most casualties on 24/8/17 were caused by shell fire. There were about 100 casualties in the battalion. Worth reading the war diary. All the locations mentioned on 24/8 are around the Menin Road
