steviebee Posted 18 March , 2019 Share Posted 18 March , 2019 Hi I have just found out a great uncle Francis Henry Bateman from popular London sorry no service number was in the RAF during world war 1. I was wondering if there was any information on him, or could someone point me in the right direction TIA. Steve

Pat Atkins Posted 19 March , 2019 Share Posted 19 March , 2019 Apologies if this is the same info as Horatio2 has linked to! Ancestry has a Francis Henry Bateman on the RAF Airmen records. This gives his service number as 53974, and a date of enlistment of January 12th 1917, aged 26. His next of kin was his wife, Harriet Mary Bateman. This is what the document description says; not sure what else, if anything, the document itself might contain - it's on Fold3. Speculation, but I'm guessing that as a 26-year-old in 1917 - after a year of conscription - he may have (a) transferred to the air force from another service, (b) been in a starred occupation or (c) been deemed unfit until then. Cheers, Pat
