Malcolm12hl Posted 18 March , 2019 Share Posted 18 March , 2019 The service record card for Stoker 1st Class Thomas Arthur Barlow K.11741 shows him being sentenced to two years detention by court martial on 9 March 1914 for "striking superior officers in execution of their duties" while serving on H.M.S. BLONDE. He is then shown as having joined H.M.S. ABOUKIR on 2 August 1914 and dying when that vessel was torpedoed and sunk by U 9 on 22 September 1914. There is nothing on the card to indicate that he was released from detention to serve, but I assume that he must have been. Is anyone aware of an amnesty declared as part of the pre-war mobilisation which might explain his release?
