pookie46 Posted 15 March , 2019 Share Posted 15 March , 2019 Thomas Trendall 21993 died on 3rd March 1917. This was just before the First Battle of the Scarpe (Arras offensive). I cannot find out anything about what was happening around the time he was killed. Can anyone help or direct me?? Are there any War Diaries online? PRC Posted 15 March , 2019 Share Posted 15 March , 2019 If you have a subscription to Ancestry you can also find the diaries there for the battalions that fought in France & Flanders. If not, and you'd like a "taste before you buy", the war diaries of both The Queens (Royal West Surrey Regiment) and the East Surrey Regiment are available for free online, although they lack many of the attachments and maps that might be in the original. The starting menu can be accessed here:- http://qrrarchive.websds.net/menu1.aspx?li=1 I see from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website that he was in the 1st Battalion, so the relevant page is here. http://qrrarchive.websds.net/PDF/QW00119170301.pdf BTW have you noticed that there is a Concentration Report on the CWGC webpage for Thomas. This shows where he was originally buried before being moved postwar to the Peronne Communal Cemetery extension. https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/289323/trendall,-/ Hope that helps, Peter
