Guest Posted 11 March , 2019 Share Posted 11 March , 2019 Hello, I am searching for information regarding Henry Alfred Oram, born 1877. He was in the East Surrey Regiment, No 24306. He was captured on 3rd May 1917 at Cherisy, I am not sure where he was sent then, but believe went to Altdamm 14th December 1918, then on to Aachen before being repatriated. Would be great is anyone had any more details on him as husbands grandfather. Thank you,
Stebie9173 Posted 11 March , 2019 Share Posted 11 March , 2019 Welcome to the Forum. Have you checked out the International Committee for the Red Cross site's prisoner of war lists? He has a card on their (free) site: https://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/File/Details/3760207/3/2/ If you type the PA numbers into the box you will get various lists reporting his presence at various camps. The camp names are usually written on the top of the pages (and typed a few pages further up at the beginning of the lists). Most lists were sent when men arrived at the camps. They are in German so some translation is needed. Let us know if you need any interpretation. Steve.
PRC Posted 12 March , 2019 Share Posted 12 March , 2019 (edited) The transcribed East Surrey War Diaries are available online, although they lack many of the appendices and maps that might be in the original. The War Diary entry for the 8th Battalion for the 3rd May 1917 simply refers to a report but if you scroll down it is attached. Day & report http://qrrarchive.websds.net/PDF/ES00819170503.pdf Website http://qrrarchive.websds.net/menu1.aspx?li=1 (Henry is shown on the ICRC card as serving in "D" Company. 8th Battalion). The report mentions the role of the 7th Royal West Kents. Their version of the events of the day can be read in their official histroty. That starts at the bottom of page 254 and goes through to the end of page 256. If you contnue scrolling down a few pages you will come to sketch 30 which maps the area where the fighting took place. http://janetandrichardsgenealogy.co.uk/QORWK - C T ATKINSON Ch 15.pdf Hope that helps, Peter Edited 12 March , 2019 by PRC Typo's
