pookie46 Posted 11 March , 2019 Share Posted 11 March , 2019 I am rather confused as to why I cannot find a service number for a Lieutenant in WW1. His name is Walter Adam Stainton who was with the 3rd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards and died on 14th September 1916 on the eve of the Battle of Flers-Courcelette. CWGC do not give a service number either. Is there an obvious reason for this? Can anyone help please? Thank you.

Admin Michelle Young Posted 11 March , 2019 Admin Share Posted 11 March , 2019 As far as I’m aware, officers did not have service numbers during the Great War. Michelle

clk Posted 11 March , 2019 Share Posted 11 March , 2019 Hi pookie46, Whilst not a service number as such, he had an admin number of 131774. That number is also the "Former reference in its original department" shown against his service file from the link that Andy posted. From the Index to Long Number Papers...
