chrismanning Posted 7 March , 2019 Share Posted 7 March , 2019 Hi Another mystery I've come upon regarding my Great uncle Frederick William Clarke (Queens Bays) recently my Uncle gave me the medals from WW1 that Fred was awarded which included the Mons star. (Aug - Nov) No i Know my Great Uncle was killed in the first Battle of Ypres on the 31st of Oct, as to the rest of the battles fought before he got there I can only guess at Nery etc. My question is why didn't he receive the clasp and rose with the medal. I have the letter confirming he died that day and that hes commemorated on the Menin gate. I have attached two documents which verify the above.. any help always gratefully received
Chris_Baker Posted 7 March , 2019 Share Posted 7 March , 2019 (edited) The clasp was not issued with the medal. It was necessary to apply for it and in many cases it was a considerable time before this was done, if at all. I have been working on one today where the clasp was not sent until 1938, for example.
