If you go via the east coast you might look at the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre:

But check the opening hours.

https://www.scotborders.gov.uk/directory_record/10701/coldstream_museum

Museum dedicated to Coldstream and the Guards thereof, in the Scottish Borders (not to be confused with the Guards Museum in London).

If you go there you'll be about 20 miles from Bemersyde (Haig's home) and Dryburgh Abbey (where he is buried).

Stobs WW1 POW camp is worth a visit. But wrap up well if you go in December!

It's Scotland: take a vest whenever you go.

Unless you go in summer, which is always the nicest day of the year.

Leith Cemetery with the memorial to the dead of the Quintishill Disaster is well worth a visit if you are near Edinburgh.

I second that.  A quite incredible event, a sort of perfect storm - if you like?  Fascinating anecdotes and some myths/legends about it abound...
