Not actually correct.  CBS insisted that it was made with a laugh track, against the makers' wishes.  

 

You are right that the BBC didn't play it though.

Blimey! The Extensive Library confirms your assertion IPT. I did watch on BBC so that explains it.

Anyway: it's just some prop in a comedy series, it's not supposed to be historically correct.

 

My point is that the prop is clearly the Army GCM.  If we want to list the solecisms that reveals, well Colonel Potter wouldn't have qualified for a GCM in 1941 anyway being a medical officer by then!  Nor is it related to his Great War back story.  Some props guy is turning in his grave, wincing as we laser dissect his work!  If only he had done his research...
