Hi all,

I don't know much how to read RN rating cards. Just wanted to ask is here anything interesting as well or ordinary ww1 service?43343_366_0-00210.jpg.6a353389e3afb69720692afeb3a0d05d.jpg

Like I understand HMS Warspite was in Jutland?

Thanks

The most significant posting is Warspite. It was at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. The ship was only commissioned in March 1915 and he was thus part of its original crew.

Ther were casualties at Jutland and the ship was holed about 150 times.

He appears on the crew list

Acted as escort to The German Fleet as it went to Scapa Flow in November 1918.

Naval specialists should be able to provide more background

Here for his previous ship CHARYBDIS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astraea-class_cruiser (looks as if training/promotion to Leading Seaman happened during his intervening time on the books of shore establishment VIVID I).

Thank you so much! That's brilliant information! Warspite name was familiar because its on his medal and I saw that it was in Jutland alright but wasn't sure how is possible to confirm that he was there at that time. This original crew list is handy! Also HMS Watchman service looks fascinating - especially because he was from Co.Cork, he was on the Irish coast then on the same ship during the Irish Civil War!

I am collecting mainly medals to the Irish units but somehow, but I picked up his LSGC medal (named to the same HMS Warspite) and also his BWM. His 15 Star and VM must be out there somewhere as well.

Among with the same medal lot I got as well West and East Africa medal with "Benin 1897" clasp (HMS Phoebe) to another Cork man - 150965 George Williams. Looks like this other lad served as well during the WW1 and finished his service in the shore establishment "Colleen" 1919 when he was invalided.

Here are his files

PO Williams' service was all in shore establishments except for the first three months of the war when he was mobilised from the Royal Fleet Reserve and served in the Armed Merchant Cruiser (AMC) HMS ALSATIAN

Thank you for your help! And I assume rest of the time he was in Colleen - a shore establishment in Cork, where he was from anyway. 1917 invalided out.

Apart from five months in Devonport Barracks (HMS VIVID) Nov 1914 to Apr 1915. He served in COLLEEN from then until the end of August 1919 when he was invalided.

Thank you! I saw 1917 somehow! :)

Probably there are no sources to find out the reason why he was invalided? At that time already in Cork (known as "Rebel County") had lots of disturbances already.

taking into consideration of his old age he must landed on fairly easy position there I guess.

Does his record not say "Fracture Right [something]"? Is it "Hand" or "Femur" - difficult to make out.

I must go to the Specsavers! I saw that invalided and then steering absolutely wrong area of the file! Thank you again and I am sorry to bother with so silly questions when the answer was actually front of my nose here.

The script loses definition when I zoom in, but I'm wondering if it's "Fracture Right Forearm", the writer having run the last word off the page and onto the edge of the page behind.

To me it reads as Fracture Right Humerus.
