Remembered Today:

Ronald D Francis Simson, Lieutenant RFA

Lieutenant Ronald D Simson, RFA was killed on 14 September 1914. He was a Scottish Rugby International. (He is the first name on "my" next war memorial.)

I cannot find an officer's file for him in the TNA index nor can I find a long number for him. However I could have missed something, especially in the file of long numbers.

Can anyone please point me in the direction of his officer's file?

Can't find at NA either but there is a long bio on FMP in the British Army, bond of sacrifice, officers died in the Great War.

Thank you both!

I had not seen the Bond of Sacrifice entry before it will be very useful. There is a brief (two and a bit lines or so) entry in de Ruvigny in which the mother's name is a blank.

(I'm a but relieved that I hadn't missed his entry in the TNA catalogue or the long number file!)

He has an entry and a picture on p.198-199 of Nigel McCrery's 'Into touch: rugby internationals killed in the Great War".

Entered the RMA Woolwich in 1909 which may account for why he doesn't have the typical officer's record?

Thanks Jane.

I have a copy of Into Touch. It's where I found out that he was an International.

That's a useful suggestion. I was surprised that there wasn't even a long number.

Some (all) of the records including his CWGC main entry place him in 16 Battery 116 Brigade RFA.  That is not correct, apart from anything else, 116 Brigade didn't go to war until the end of 1915 and didn't have a 16 Battery.

He served with 116 Battery in 26 Brigade RFA.  The war diary WO 95/1250 records (at the end of the September diary) his death on 15 September 1914 as does the 1st Division CRA diary which includes some sketches of the battery positions at the time.

Thank you very much, Max.

I wouldn't have picked that up.
