calibre792x57.y Posted 7 March , 2019 Share Posted 7 March , 2019 (edited) In Anthony Carter's 'German Bayonets' Volume 3 P.39 this type of bayonet is recorded as EB3, one of the most common of these all steel bayonets. Although collectors commonly refer to these bayonets as 'ersatz' bayonets, it would be more correct to name them as 'Emergency M.1888/98 bayonets'. See 'Rifle & Carbine 98' Pg.360.The ersatz patterns are a different group as seen in the M.98/14 patterns. Looking at the photos I would say that the blade seems a little short, perhaps having been blunted and re-pointed. Blade length should be 317 mm. (12.48 ins.) Hope this is of some assistance. These all steel bayonets were widely issued during 1914/15 to overcome the short fall in manufacture of the regulation models. They were mostly withdrawn from service in 1917 as the supply of regulation patterns became adequate. - SW Edited 7 March , 2019 by calibre792x57.y
