Remembered Today:

What was the father's occupation?

James Paull was the father of Edward Gordon Paull of 1/7 Gordon Highlanders (dow 25 November 1916).

For most of his life James Paull was an estate forester. However on the marriage certificate in 1888, in addition to forester's labourer, he indicated that he was a Private, Army Reserve, 1 Royal Welsh Fusiliers. In the 1891 Census, Paul was a farm servant. This is from the birth record of Edward Gordon Paull's elder sister in 1890. On Edward Gordon Paull's birth record (1894) James was a forester.

Can anyone please decipher what his occupation was in 1890?

Thank you.

Mike.

Thank you.

I don't think so - but now I can see  "-man"  which I couldn't before! It gives me an idea - Ploughman?

Starts with a Pion - the P is identical to the start of his surname

Max

Edit - Pion could well be Plou as you surmise
