Recommended Posts

I picked this up at auction a couple of weeks ago.

My theory is ;Retailed by Hamburger Rodgers & Co , made by Mole ? Does anyone know if Hamburger and Rodgers records exist ?as would love to trace its original owner.

Any thoughts/comments/ information very welcome. Thanks in advance,

Richard

Richard,

I think that you have an “in” here with M 0780 which is very possibly the Mole serial number.

Wilkinson bought Mole post-Great War, and also their records.

I know that Wilkinson will do an ownership check for their own swords (for a fee), so they can probably do the same for you.

JMB

Thanks JMB ,problem is as it was retailed by Hamburger,Rodgers & Co. Don’t know if it was a ‘stock’ item for the Outfitter.??????

Richard,

I had thought that possibly R& H might have reported back to Mole regarding the purchaser.

Looks like Hamburger, Rogers & Co

of 30 King Street, Covent Garden, London, WC

  • 1750 Company established.
  • Also traded as R & H Hewetson - 1796
  • Hamburger & Co 1814
  • Hamburger Harwood and Co - 1827
  • Hamburger, Rogers and Co
  • 1914 Gold lacemen and military contractors. Specialities: cavalry and yeomanry outfits, court uniforms, gold lace.

The last line being the most relevant.

Thanks Gunner,

I have found out from Moles records that a batch of these swords were supplied to Hamburger,Rodgers & Co. In 1913, at a cost price of 59s &6d !!

Sadly without  Their records unable to put a name or unit to it.

But perhaps ( given the date) able to give it some Great War provenance.?

R.
