Rope - and Pom-Poms on sticks

This is thought to be 8th Devonshire about 1915. Any thoughts on the 'accessories'?

Army sports, the rope is for 'tug of war' and the 'mops' I think are used in piggy-back jousting, or similar knock em down/off games.

8th Hants used to do wheelbarrow jousting if you missed the target a bucket of water descended upon you.

I like that idea. 

Incidentally, there are 35 blokes in this photo. Would that signify that this group ( a company?) may have been victors in some competition involving tug of war and piggy back jousting?
