Remembered Today:

Gewehr 88, Production stamp 1890

I acquired this the Monday.  When I got it I hadn't noticed all the markings.  I was wondering if there would be  anyone here that might can help me out.  I will post pictures with what I think the markings are for, if i have any idea at all.  Here goes.

Production mark and the S for Spitzer round conversion?

Right side of the receiver next to production mark.  I have no idea.

The ladder sight appears to be marked 450 through 1800 meters.  I assume that is what the half slash mark under the 600 range indicator means.  Otherwise it is 500 through 1800.  Also there is a

C 205 marking just above the 17 marking and left of the 18 marking. The slide for the ladder sight has the release on the right side as seen in the photo.

There is the number 18 stamped on part of the rear of the bolt.

It has what I think are Reserve Regiment stamps.  Two different ones. The first is

73R.R.9.157. And then a sideways 18.

The second is 38.R.R.11.88

Finally, there are two sets of marking on the stock.  One is next the the rear sling attachment ring, the letter F, and the other is on the side of the stock, six indistinct symbols with the one furthest from the butt having a X stamped over it.

Sorry for the length.

Welcome to GWF!

Looks to be a nice piece. I have a book at home that explains those markings, and except for remembering that 'S' is indeed for Spitzer I have clean forgotten what they all mean! To be going on with, the sets of 3 crowned stamps in a row, though, are inspectors marks during manufacture and testing.

Unit marks more my thing, and as those are 'script' or italic 'R's then yes, they are Reserve Infantry Regiment markings with company and weapon number. Forget the sideways '8', an inspection stamp of some kind. Looks like this one went to the reserve of Füsilier-Regiment General-Feldmarschall Graf Moltke (Schlesisches) Nr.38 first, and then to the reserve regiment of the  Füsilier-Regiment Feldmarschall Prinz Albrecht von Preußen (Hannoversches) Nr.73, which happens to be a very famous regiment as one of its members was Ernst Junger, the author of the classic Storm of Steel!

Welcome to the Gorum, TRAJAN is best for unit markings. The ladder site, top left 17, top right 18, on top I see 20.5.  I do not know what the 5 is for, but

= 1700 meters. 1800 and 2000 meters, with the new spitzer round, it "could" be 2500 meter, not sure

. When a gun or bayonet was used by a second unit, the armourers would strike , line or dot out the last unit. Both units are on bands, I guessing one on each band.is one band mismatch serial # from another gun, replacement ?

Still interesting, pics pretty dark, maybe some more pics with better light please
