After nine years of painstaking historical and on-site investigative work the Durand Group (www.durandgroup.org.uk) are in the process of collating a book on the military engineering aspects of the "Loos Salient". We have most of the assets needed but are putting a request out to forum members for help in obtaining scanned sections from the following rare accounts:

  • Das Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 55 im Weltkrieg (220 ID)
  • Geschichte des Reserve-Infanterie-Regiments Nr.99 (220 ID)
  • Den gefallenen Helden des Schleswig-Holsteinischen Pionier-Bataillons Nr.9 und seiner Kriegsformationen
  • Von Niewport bis Podfilipie : aus der Geschichte der 4. Ersatz-Division
  • Geschichte der Mindener Pioniere 1804 bis 1936 in Abrissen

All these texts are available to some extent via international libraries but not readily accessed from UK. We need pages only related to time spent in the Loos Salient (Givenchy- Lens). We need only scans or photos, as we can convert the FRAKTUR image into GERMAN text. Modest expenses can be forwarded to those who can help,

good Morning,

I also work on the Battle of Loos (Oct 1914-May 1915-Sept 1915 and Aug 1917)
I'll give you a list of the history I have tonight.

Kind regards

Michel

Hello,

I have the history of RIR 55 (and of the 4th Ersatz Division, but as I said I would ruin the book trying to scan or photograph pages).

Thanks for this. I'm a bit of a rookie with regard to some of the nuances but you have made things a fair bit easier for me.

FYI My Grandfather was conscripted into 53rd YS Bn Manchester Regt in Jan 1918. He was seconded to 23rd Royal Fusiliers from April as a Lewis Gunner for the remainder of the war with 2 Div and finished up in Cologne.
