Guest Posted 17 February , 2019 Share Posted 17 February , 2019 I would welcome advice on how to find out about the Battle of the Transloy Ridges on the Somme, 1-20 October 1916. Specifically, what happened on 9 October 1916. My great uncle George Boreham was killed on that date. He was in the 10th Bttn The Queens (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, which was deployed as part of 124 Brigade of the 41st Division, a division which was committed to that battle. There is no grave but his name is on the Thiepval Monument.
Admin Michelle Young Posted 17 February , 2019 Admin Share Posted 17 February , 2019 Welcome to the forum Nick. In the absence of better answers, I did a search on Transloy and got a lot of threads coming up. It might be worth you doing the same. clk Posted 17 February , 2019 Share Posted 17 February , 2019 Hi Nick, Welcome to the forum. The Soldiers' Effects record for George introduces an element of doubt as to his actual date of his death, by giving a date range of 3rd to 9th October 1916. Speculation on my part - he may have been present for a formal roll call on the 2nd/3rd, but not for one on the 9th/10th. If you have access to Ancestry, the October 1916 war diaries for the Battalion, Brigade HQ, and Division HQ are here, here, and here. They are also available from the National Archives - search page.
