clive_hughes Posted 14 February , 2019 Share Posted 14 February , 2019 (edited) Hi, In chasing a later casualty's records I noted that he was transferred in April 1916 from his unit 3/1st Brecknocks. Battalion SWB, and posted as a junior NCO with 10th Observation Company RDC, at Bramall Lane Pavilion, Sheffield. He was transferred away from there in November 1916. I know that the ground at Bramall Lane was used by early war "Pals" units; and that the Cricket Pavilion was later a war hospital, but can anyone suggest what role an Observation Company of the RDC might have fulfilled there? HERITAGE PLUS Posted 14 February , 2019 Share Posted 14 February , 2019 Clive Observer (not Observation) companies were deployed to spot German Zeppelins and aircraft raiding Britain and were the forerunners of the Royal Observer Corps. Air Raids on Sheffield are discussed here: https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/content/dam/sheffield/docs/libraries-and-archives/archives-and-local-studies/research/WW1 Study Guide v1-11.pdf Dave
clive_hughes Posted 14 February , 2019 Author Share Posted 14 February , 2019 Thank you very much Dave, I accept your reading of it, it's just that his papers twice refer to Observation Co. no. 10. Cheers, Clive
