Hi Glyn,

Very many thanks for your reply. Something that you might be interested in, is that I believe in the 1901 census his father was a Police Constable in Walthamstow, London. There was also his mother Jane, does anyone know if there were any other siblings ?

Cheers

Tim,

He was one of the original recruits in the 17th Middlesex. In Nov 1915, he proceeded with this battalion to France on the SS Bellerophon. He subsequently transferred to the 23rd Middlesex at later date (not sure when). Is he a relative of yours? I am fairly sure that he had a younger brother.

Hi There,

Could you please expand on who the 23rd Middlesex were, and why he might have transfered ? Please excuse my ignorance regarding the Middlesex Regiment !

Tim,

The 23rd Middlesex were the second footballers' battalion to be raised during the war (the 17th Middlesex being the first). Raised by the charismatic Joynson Hicks MP on 29th June 1915, they went to France in May 1916, as part of 41st Division. In November 1917, the battalion was sent to Italy, returning to France in March 1918, where it served until the Armistice.

There are several reasons, as to why he might have transferred. He might, for example, have been wounded, then posted to the 23rd on recovering from his wounds.

I still have to iron out some inconsistencies, in relation to places of birth, but there is every possibility that Burt's younger brother was the footballer, Alfie Tyler (Brighton and Charlton). I will let you know what my research turns up.

Can I ask what you have that relates to Burt?

Regards,

AGWR

Hi AGWR,

Not anything that is of great interest, but I have two 'In Memorium Cards' relating to him, but what is of interest, is that they have a photograph of him on them, which is unusual !

On the 1901 census, Burt is aged 7 and has a younger brother Alfred, aged 4. Parents were Burt (35) and Jane (38).
