Martin Lepley Posted 11 February , 2019 Share Posted 11 February , 2019 The Kynoch Explosive works in Essex had a Balloon Apron around it to protect it from the air. Does anyone know what the tethers would have looked like, and will the Balloons be winched down when the weather was bad or left in place? I was wondering whether there might be some remains from the Balloon Apron surviving today if they were large enough. Martin
Open Bolt Posted 11 February , 2019 Share Posted 11 February , 2019 I would imagine well sunk concrete - have you found something? https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205021940 I recall the aprons are described in IV Hogg's 'Anti-aircraft: a history of air defence', but not the detail you require. Open Bolt Posted 11 February , 2019 Share Posted 11 February , 2019 Ah... this painting is of Kynoch https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/7533 'A very interesting record will be the Balloon Barrages which go up in the evening as a protection to Kynoch's Factory, on Canvey Island.' You may be able to identify the stacks and the point of view.
Martin Lepley Posted 11 February , 2019 Author Share Posted 11 February , 2019 I am familiar with both of those pictures. I was wondering how they might be tethered and whether there might be some remains. I have not found anything, or even looked. Not sure I know what I would be looking for so would not be able to identify it if it was there, but if they were on a winch system, maybe there needs to be some concrete construction to physically hold it in place.
