Hi,

 today's find.

£65 asking price;  not knowing what the cross was I haggled - £60 with a tobacco tin and small green poison bottle thrown in.

O.B.E (unnamed), BWM + VM + Miniatures, to - Capt. Cuthbert Joseph Harwood Little,  R.A.M.C.   B. 1889 Durham.

Masonic Royal Arch Companion's Breast Jewel.

14-15 Star and VM with MiD emblem to Rev. Harwood Little Army Chaplain.  B. 1857 Madras.

Can anyone help with a picture of either of these men please.

Probably worth trying the Museum of Army Chaplaincy for the latter, whose first name was Joseph - https://www.chaplains-museum.co.uk/.

Ancestty message board says Cuthbert Joseph was Joseph's father https://www.ancestry.co.uk/boards/surnames.harwood/319.2.1/mb.ashx and if you follow the message trail down it looks as if one of the posters may have family photographs.

It is just possible (looking at the messages in the thread again) that he was a Methodist chaplain in which case http://www.methodistheritage.org.uk/research-circuitarchives.htm

Googling "harwood little"+chaplain picks up London Gazette entries.

Many thanks seaJane.

Joseph Harwood is the father of C.J.H. Little,    plenty of circles as C.1911, MiD card and Army lists all named to Harwood Little,  duplicates to Joseph Harwood.

The photos listed on Ancestry are documents & family crest only.

Thanks Kim.

Bargain indeed;   My better half suggested I could sell them - and give the seller half the proceeds.....    I think not.

I thought the O.B.E. was a Red Cross award of some sort before I googled it.

What's the point of having librarian superpowers if I don't use them? ;)

The Rev actually served as Harwood Little only

Thanks for looking and for the links provided.

His VM is named to Rev. H. Little, the 14-15 Star to Rev. H. Little A.C.D.

Plenty of newspaper articles for both the Rev J & Dr CJH Little OBE, plus written articles in the Lancet, Dr Little OBE seems to have been a pathologist for the Worthing area.

Sorry no photos as yet, but have found his Sister and Rev J's daughter.

Seems to be an Obituary for CJH locked behind the BMJ doors....

He also listed in the West Sussex records office for the Royal West Sussex Hospital.

Should be possible to reach the BMJ for free via one of the medical abstracting websites - I'll check later.

Cuthbert Joseph Harwood-Little obituary from the BMJ available here: https://europepmc.org/backend/ptpmcrender.fcgi?accid=PMC1872153&blobtype=pdf

If I was doing this search my next step, noting the length of time he lived and worked in Chichester, would be to make enquiries at the West Sussex via the options here https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/leisure-recreation-and-community/history-and-heritage/west-sussex-past-portal/ or to contact the Record Office directly, record . office @ westsussex . gov. uk (close up the spaces, which I have inserted to foil the spambots).

I'll leave one behind the counter at your fave cafe if I'm away working; I don't see many Bank Holidays!
