Hi all. My first post :lol:

I found today on flea market. Signal mirror? 

Measurments: 14.7 / 9.3 / 1.4 cm.

 

Back markings:

OAS STAND \ ARTILLERY

RANGEFINDER. MARK II

No 2176

WHIPPY

London

 

Not sure first part: GAS 87AND \ ...

 

 

On left side: arrow with long leg, under head left A(?), under head right 4(?)

It rather looks to me that someone has created a home-made travel mirror using leather salvaged from a military leather case, hence the terribly irregular stitching that goes through the wording.

Whippy-Stegall & Co were saddlery makers - 1782 -1942 (info off the internet). I rather agree with Andrew that the item looks rather too home made to me and I suspect some pieces of old saddlery leather have been used for the purpose. The stamp 'Artillery' has actually affected the stitching line which in other parts also looks distinctly handmade.

The front has the appearance of travel mirrors of the period with tooled edging around the mirror plate and neat stitching, qiute commonly carried in personal kit, so wondering if the back leather has been replaced, and restitched through the front holes...maybe even having the plate replaced after damage.

Probably You are right. Well. I have now traveling/signaling vintage mirror in leather case :P
