It is the entry in bold I am curious about - 'ret. pay to be Lt Cols.' why does this need to be stated? What does it mean? 'with seniority 29 Jun 1918' - as he is retired, what does this mean for him?
HarryBrook Posted 27 January , 2019 Share Posted 27 January , 2019 "Lt.-Cols., ret. pay, to be Lt.-Cols." is just official confirmation that his rank when placed on the Regular Army Reserve of Officers, on 1st July 1925, was Lt.-Col. He had retired and been placed on retired pay on the same date. The seniority date is a means of knowing which of two officers of equal rank is senior and which is subordinate to the other. As an example, in the film Zulu, Lt. Chard (played by Stanley Baker) and Lt. Bromhead (played by Michael Caine) compare their seniority dates to see who should command the force at Rourke's Drift: Chard was senior and took command. Another gazette entry which be of interest - issue 33008 of 2 January 1925 page 53 The undermentioned on completion of four years serv. as Regtl. Lt.-Cols., are placed on the h.p [half pay] list:- 1st Jan. 1925 The list included L. A. D. Naper, D.S.O.
