Dear Members

I am researching John Owen Thomas who was captured in the Battle of Cambrai on December 3rd 1917 at Le Quesnoy. Attached please find a copy of his Medal Index Card and also a record of his capture. Is there any information regarding his time at the prison and when was he released?. I am unable able to find his Service Records.

                                     Thank you

                                            Regards

                                                   John White

Hi John

Not specific to your man but apparently a British soldier, Private Harry Bolam, Coldstream Guards was flogged to death there as reported by two Russians who escaped http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2617285 and http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2617318

And Gurkhas were held there too https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205227325 There are a number of photos at IWM but sadly not yet digitised https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/search?query=scheidemuhl&pageSize=15&filters[periodString][First+World+War]=on

Regards

David

Dear David

Thanks for your prompt reply. I wonder what his "offence" was. Seems a pretty gruesome place.

                                     Regards

Dear David & members

I attach below details of exactly how Bolam ( or Bowlam) Coldstream Guards 9232 met his death. I am pretty certain it's the same man but whilst the diary shows November 3rd in" Soldiers who died in the Great War" it is  February 21st 1915. The Medal Index Card shows that he received  a !914 star. The final date for this medal was November 22nd. Perhaps the February date was when his date of death was notified.

                                      Regards

                                            John White
