Phil99 Posted 20 January , 2019 Share Posted 20 January , 2019 I have been doing a bit of research on a shell casing which belonged to my grandparents and is now mine, so far I have found out the follow (i think)... Its a 57x305R 6 pounder artillery case. Made in 1904 by the Royal Laboratories Arsenal in Woolwich. (R L) It has a mark II primer. (L in a circle) Its been annealed once and reloaded once after initial manufacture. (A in a circle with 1 dot and a second F added to original CF) QA'd by E46? Mark III casing? Government stamped (arrow head)? There is a small symbol above the III and the numbers 16, 2 above a 5 and an 04 does anyone know what these mean? Thanks for any help. 14276265 Posted 20 January , 2019 Share Posted 20 January , 2019 /|\ 2 and 16 5 04 (16 May 1904) is the original acceptance inspection mark and date of inspection, while E46 is the batch letter and number of the annealing upon rectification. It is the numeral 1 in a circle that identifies the Mark II percussion cap.
Phil99 Posted 20 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 20 January , 2019 Thanks for that, not sure why i mistook the 1 for an L ! Do you recognise the small symbol at the top by any chance?
14276265 Posted 20 January , 2019 Share Posted 20 January , 2019 Can you post a sharp image of just that mark? It might be a condemnation mark, but the current image is not quite clear enough for my old eyes.

14276265 Posted 20 January , 2019 Share Posted 20 January , 2019 Good image thanks, but I'm no wiser. I thought it might be a rejection stamp after second firing, although with the punch mark it may be a hardness test stamp. However, it is not a scleroscope hardness test mark. Sorry can't help beyond that.
