Understanding military Nomenclature

Recommended Posts

I have just started to research a soldier who was in the HAC in 1917 (returned to UK wounded in Oct) I am struggling to understand the nomenclature: he was in  7th Division 2/1 what does 2/1 mean? I would be really grateful if someone could give me some direction on this and I know I it is a really basic question so apologies but I am new to all of this

2nd line of the 1st Honourable Artillery Company Battalion.

In simple terms the 1st Battalion had another battalion formed from it shortly after the war started as part of a planned war time expansion. The original battalion became 1/1 and new battalion 2/1. Most territorial battalions did the same.
