Evening all, Can anyone let me know what W.O.P. or W.O.D. means on the attached MSM card?  Could it also be W.D.P. ???

Thanks all for your input but I have lots of information on this man. The focus please is; Can anyone let me know what W.O.P. or W.O.D. means on the attached MSM card?  Could it also be W.D.P. ???

Thanks

Ray

Don’t know the answer but i would suggest it’s a ‘P’ and not a ‘D’

War Office ?

I was thinking War Office as well

Thanks but there is nothing on the back of the card?  So I don't know why PTO is on the card.

Apologies, but there's nothing in the MSM section of Williamson's Medal Collectors Companion that conclusively explains this W.O.P. annotation :(

The only possible I could see was Without Pension, but this is my own personal inference based on Williamson's W.P. GALL, which he decodes as "Medal awarded with pension for Gallantry."

He makes no specific reference to W.O.P.

A possible match for a George COSFORD in the Rifle Brigade is ...

S/31616 Rfn George COSFORD, 11/RB

 - ditto - , 16/RB

443165 Labour Corps

52650, Rifle Brigade, Depot

This fits quite well with him ending the War not A1 fighting fit and then posted to 43rd (Garrison) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers protecting the Army HQs in France after the Armistice.

I could not find a Royal Fusiliers campaign medal roll entry for G/106864 Pte George COSFORD, 43(G)/RF, but I'd be the first to admit I not particularly at home in the RF rolls.  If he is indeed absent therefrom, then that could suggest a post-Armistice transfer.

Andy may be able to add some more.

Do you have any detail of the citation for his 1919 MSM Gallantry award?  These were typically bravery shown in emergencies such as fires, drowning, serious accidents etc.  A fair few were apparently related to grenade/Mills bomb training mishaps!
