BillyH Posted 15 January , 2019 Share Posted 15 January , 2019 Probably a silly question this, but is it 100% true to say that no soldier in WW1 had a 6 digit number before early 1917 when the TF were renumbered? I am specifically interested in Royal Engineers numbers. BillyH.
Terry_Reeves Posted 15 January , 2019 Share Posted 15 January , 2019 (edited) Billy Six digit numbers for the RE were introduced in May 1915. The first one was 100000, issued to CQMS William John Killingback. Are you interested in a particular group of numbers? BillyH Posted 15 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 15 January , 2019 That's just what I was hoping to hear Terry! I had an Engineer with a 156,000 number and it was issued in January 1916. I was assuming that it was a 1917 number and that he must have had an earlier 4 or 5 digit number not shown on his MIC. You learn something new every day! BillyH.
