Remembered Today:

6 digit numbers

Probably a silly question this, but is it 100% true to say that no soldier in WW1 had a 6 digit number before early 1917 when the TF were renumbered?

I am specifically interested in Royal Engineers numbers.

Six digit numbers for the RE were introduced in May 1915. The first one was 100000, issued to CQMS William John Killingback. Are you interested in a particular group of numbers?

That's just what I was hoping to hear Terry!

I had an Engineer with a 156,000 number and it was issued in January 1916. I was assuming that it was a 1917 number and that he must have had an earlier 4 or 5 digit number not shown on his MIC.

You learn something new every day!
