ryandunny Posted 13 January , 2019 Share Posted 13 January , 2019 Hi all. This will probably sound like a silly question(!) But is it highly likely that Trench Art on a British shell would have been done by a British soldier and a German one a German or did it vary? Thanks Ryan. depaor01 Posted 13 January , 2019 Share Posted 13 January , 2019 No such thing as a silly question around these parts. As someone who is a fan of trench art, I believe it was made from battlefield pickups. Whatever was lying on the ground was brought home and engraved/modified by someone with the tools. There are many pics on this forum of French shells with apparently British inscriptions and other combinations. I have a German bracelet made from a French driving band. I believe the artefact v maker nationality stats are totally random. Dave
ryandunny Posted 13 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 13 January , 2019 Thanks for the reply Dave! Nice to know. I've got a couple of peices of trench art but picked up a 1918 German shell today with Nieuport written across and some artwork on the other side and it made me wonder. Thanks for clearing it up. Gunner Bailey Posted 13 January , 2019 Share Posted 13 January , 2019 I've seen many British and German shell cases worked by the French. I've only seen a couple of German cases worked by British soldiers.
