Fitter or Farrier Staff Serjeant

Hello all.  I have attached a photo of one of my great uncles, Charles Young CHIDDY together with his MIC.

He survived the war but not much of his records appears to have.

Findmypast lists him as a Farrier Staff Sargeant but I believe Fitter Staff Sarjeant may be more correct - can anyone confirm please?

The photograph appears to show a rank of Battery Sargeant Major......I'm confused.

Also, how can I find out which units/locations he served with/at. 

What would his job have been as a Fitter Staff Sarjeant.

The Fitter Staff Sergeant has already been confirmed on your previous thread.

 

He is wearing the rank of a Staff Sergeant, with the appointment of Fitter.

 

I suspect he was one of those rare RFA men who actually served with a RGA unit very early on, but was not officially transferred until February 1918. The date of entry in a theatre of war would tie in with the battery I was thinking of on your first enquiry, but you never confirmed, if you know, whether he also served in Salonika.

I do apologise for not replying.

I don't seem to receive any email notifications of any replies on this site and I don't visit it often enough!

I haven't been able to find any further information about where or when he served.

I am planning a visit to Kew in the future but am not hopeful that this would help with this enquiry.

Do you know what the job 'fitter' entailed?
