How to Find ?

Recommended Posts

I have discovered a relative who appears to have served in the Navy before then entering Merchant Navy at the end of the War.

Can anyone advise where to look.

I have no information relating to his service history only his personal details.

I have tried entering his details into National Archive but with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Gordon

If you can give us the details you have (names, age, date of birth etc) then it'll give us something to go on, as the police said in the case of the disappearing toilet.

Hello people,, sorry for delay and thanks for responding.

The person in question is a James Kemp born 09/11/1888 in Glasgow.

Married 14/04/1911 to an Elizabeth Benzie in Glasgow.

Working as dock labourer in 1911 census

Any help re how to find merchant and naval history would be appreciated

I have looked in the Discovery catalogue http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk under the name "Kemp, James" + BT for the Merchant Navy and dates 1900-1924. The nearest hit is a man born Edinburgh 1884.

Same name + ADM for Admiralty gives 8 entries all with wrong year and place of birth plus one RNVR with these details not supplied. He is in Mine Clearance, service no. MC2553. I've looked at the preview of the record and it has no corroborative information at all that I can see. Sorry!

It means I can't find him where I'd normally expect to, if he served and if all information given is correct :) - but I am not infallible and he may be out there somewhere.
