David Ingleby Posted 9 January , 2019 Share Posted 9 January , 2019 I am researching a soldier who was one of 850 or so employees of the Great Northern Railway who fell in WW1. He was Corporal Horace Simmons of the 6th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. He was wounded on July 1st and died of those wounds the following day in the 34th (1st West Lancs) CCS and is buried in Daoers Communal Cemetery Extension. I am a bit confused by the addition of what appears to be "Fus" (Fusiliers???) after 6 N, and the initials T.M.B. in the company column. Can anyone help? JimE Posted 9 January , 2019 Share Posted 9 January , 2019 6 N Fus would be 6 Northumberland Fusiliers. However other (CWGC, SDGW, Soldiers Effects) records show Horace Simmons as 6 Northamptonshire Regiment, so presumably this is just a clerical error, perhaps from a hasty "NF" note. Stebie9173 Posted 10 January , 2019 Share Posted 10 January , 2019 (edited) Yes, the NF is an error - in my opinion. 13763 Horace Simmons was in the 6th Northamptons. He was from Peterborough. Snippets I have on him: Enlisted at Peterborough on 2nd September 1914 per Peterborough Standard of 12-9-1914. Granted furlough from "A" Company from 30-12-1914 per 6th Bn Part II Orders dated 29-12-1914. Peterborough Mayor's Roll of Honour from early 1915 - Pte., 6th Bn. Northamptonshire Regiment, 6 Crown Street, Peterborough. Embarked to France as a Lance-Corporal with 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment on 26 July 1915 Promoted to Corporal Died of Wounds on 2 July 1916 Buried at Grave II. B. 16, DAOURS COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION. Peterborough Advertiser 22-7-1916 - Horace Simmons, 6th Northamptonshire Regiment, has died of wounds in France. He was 30 years of age, and formerly a Foreman Shunter on the G.N.R. at Fletton. His wife, who lives at Crown Street, New England, has received official intimation of his death, and to her and her six young children the greatest sympathy has been extended. I presume from the extract you posted that he was attached to 54th Trench Mortar Battery. Steve. Edited 10 January , 2019 by Stebie9173
