George Rayner Posted 8 January , 2019 Share Posted 8 January , 2019 Please can you help? Believe this to be RFC or even RAF uniform 1918/19. He is Ernest George Rayner b 1/8/1895 207310 but entered service in 1915 into RNAS then transferred. Any details would be gratefully received-postings, promotions, MIC details etc Thanking all in advance George
Blackblue Posted 8 January , 2019 Share Posted 8 January , 2019 (edited) Royal Naval Air Service I would assume. He has RN and RAF Service Papers on FindmMyPast which have his postings - some very interesting ones. Looks like he finished the war as Air Mechanic Petty Officer - stationed Cranwell Training Wing. FROGSMILE Posted 8 January , 2019 Share Posted 8 January , 2019 (edited) I agree with Tim, he's a RNAS Petty Officer in typical fore and aft rig. I enclose photos of similar, RNAS origins. Edited 8 January , 2019 by FROGSMILE
George Rayner Posted 9 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 9 January , 2019 (edited) Thank you both. Looking at records this would be after April 1917 when he was promoted PO ? And Blackblue what makes them interesting please? George Edited 9 January , 2019 by George Rayner

FROGSMILE Posted 9 January , 2019 Share Posted 9 January , 2019 (edited) Thanks to Forum member Grovetown, I’ve just recalled that there is a previous thread from last year on RNAS and RND dress here: The blue and red cloth badge from the IWM that I posted in that thread and above is actually early RAF, and the RNAS equivalent was the encircled anchor surmounted by a crown. See enclosed photo. These badges are clearly discernible in the group photos above, as well as on the subject of this thread. Blackblue Posted 13 January , 2019 Share Posted 13 January , 2019 (edited) Had a closer look - served HMS President II, HMS Daedalus, Cranwell and Roehampton (RNAS kite balloon service was based here). From what I can tell looks like PO mechanic from 30 Apr 17. Rgds Tim Edited 13 January , 2019 by Blackblue
