Guest Posted 8 January , 2019 Share Posted 8 January , 2019 A friend of mine has a bayonet with the markings 18330 and a cursive Y in a square on the pommel. Any idea who, what, when and where it's origin!!??
reese williams Posted 8 January , 2019 Share Posted 8 January , 2019 Without a picture or more information the question you have asked is the equivalent of "I have a blue car, it has black tires, what is it?" Not enough information to answer your question.
4thGordons Posted 8 January , 2019 Share Posted 8 January , 2019 ^^ This ^^ Absent pictures.... - how long is the bayonet (measurements would be good), what are the grips made of (wood, leather, Bakelite, metal), how are they attached (rivets, screws etc), does it have a muzzle ring (what's the diameter) what's the shape of the cross-piece (curved quillon, no quillon, straight...), what's the shape of the pommel, are there fullers ("blood grooves" in the blade? what is the finish on the metal? As you can see loads of useful information could be gleaned from a couple of well focused pictures. If that is totally impossible then answers to all of the above may provide some basis but with bayonets "form follows function" and as they all have basically the same function they all follow one of three of four basic forms - and as they have been around as long as firearms we have a couple of hundred years and thousands of variations to play with! BTW -- welcome to the forum- sorry if this sounds a little demanding but as reese williams has indicated a lot more info is needed to enable the folks on here to help.
