Rum Ration Posted 4 January , 2019 Posted 4 January , 2019 I was wondering what other collectors thought of this book. Is it worth buying?
Steven Broomfield Posted 4 January , 2019 Posted 4 January , 2019 Checking the Extensive Library brings up quite a few hits, but no (so far as I can see) reviews. It was discussed on the British Badge Forum in December '17, but the person who had it on order and said he'd review it later seems not to have done. It appears to have been released in November '17 and at £49.99 (although can be obtained for a lower price on other stes), not cheap.
elliot#1 Posted 8 January , 2019 Posted 8 January , 2019 (edited) IMO It's filled with a very large number of errors and doesn't really give anymore information other than a modern mock up of each badge. I would save your money for a well researched book on the subject which is in the makings. Edited 8 January , 2019 by elliot#1
mark holden Posted 8 January , 2019 Posted 8 January , 2019 Given the scant amount of reference work on the subject I would not be so quick to dismiss it. It is based on the IWM survey of unit insignia of 1917. The information has been around in typed format for some time thanks to Warings pamphlet this was a decent attempt to put the information into a format where each badge can be seen in computer generated context. It is by no means perfect and has frustrations such as omitting the size of some patches yet including that detail for others. It was also published prior to the recent Badges of Kitcheners Army by David Bilton which is a leap ahead but does contain some errors(what reference works don’t!). There are also two useful Military Historical Society booklets on MGC badges and WW Infantry Unit patches both of which have colour sections with show actual examples of the badges. They are also based on information in the IWM archive. If you are a ‘battle insignia’ anorak like me I would say add it to your library. I have certainly found more useful than not. Mark
