StuMac Posted 4 January , 2019 Posted 4 January , 2019 Hello, I have been trying to find out some information on my grand father who served in WW1. As far as I know these are his details. MS2810 L/Cpl William McConnell . Army Service Corps - Mechanical Transport. Attested 10-08-1914 Discharged 10-02-1919. I can't find any information on overseas service or medals mentioned though. He may have stayed in the UK, but it mentions he was fit for general service and only 28 years old on enlistment. I have hit a brick wall so to speak. thank you for any advice.
Admin DavidOwen Posted 4 January , 2019 Admin Posted 4 January , 2019 Hi Might I ask the origin of your information? This is because there are a number of William McConnell MICs for the ASC. Was that his full name? Good luck with your search Regards David
alf mcm Posted 4 January , 2019 Posted 4 January , 2019 There is a pension ledger index record for William on Ancestry https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=bmY22073&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&indiv=1&db=westernfrontassociation&gsfn=william&gsln=mcconnell&gsfn_x=1&gsln_x=1&cp=11&qh=jiUPFrlc94KP6avro9XSpg%3D%3D&new=1&redir=false&uidh=9y4&gss=angs-d&rank=1&pcat=39&fh=16&h=716320&recoff=&ml_rpos=17 but you need to have Fold 3 or be a member of the Western Front Association to read it. It doesn't tell you much more than you already know apart from an address in Johnstone. Regards, Alf McM
StuMac Posted 4 January , 2019 Author Posted 4 January , 2019 Hello David He had no middle name as far as I know, he passed away well before I was born and most if not all relatives that would know are all gone too now. I was given the basics from an overseas relative who saw some Army documents, but there was no mention of overseas service or medals. But I am wondering if they changed his Army number at some stage ??? I will see what I can find online. Thanks again if I find any more information I will post it here
Admin DavidOwen Posted 4 January , 2019 Admin Posted 4 January , 2019 According to the LLT the number prefix MS stands for "Mechanical Special" so might his skills have been considered too precious to have seen him transferred to an infantry battalion despite his age / medical status? I have a relative in MT ASC whose CO at Bulford kept refusing to transfer him out as being "too important to lose", although he did make a number of short trips to France with his unit before ending up there (and latterly in Germany) still with the ASC.
Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 4 January , 2019 Posted 4 January , 2019 (edited) The service records of William McConnell MS2810 have survived and are here on Ancestry: William McConnell MS2810 Was a fitter in an ironworks, attested in August 1914. Either he was at Grove Park until 1917, or else he wasn't called up until 28th March 1917? Records unclear on length of service. On that date he was transferred to Camberwell LMTRD (I think that must be 1 Mechanical Transport Reserve Depot (Grove Park), transferring to Camberwell MT Depot). No overseas service listed, hence no medals. Edited 4 January , 2019 by Dai Bach y Sowldiwr
