Jackyboy Posted 3 January , 2019 Share Posted 3 January , 2019 Hi all, I wondered if anyone could offer some advice as regards my family research. I have found an ancestor who was killed in action and I'm struggling to understand why he had two numbers and citings for both Royal Munster and for Leinster. He was Irish and was killed on the Western Front 1917. Can anyone enlighten me please? Thanks in anticipation. The detail is as follows: Regiment: Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians) Battalion: 7th Battalion Regimental Number: XXXXX Type of Casualty: Killed in action Theatre of War: Western European Theatre Comments: Formerly XXXX, Royal Munster Fusiliers. mark holden Posted 3 January , 2019 Share Posted 3 January , 2019 Transfers between Regiments were not uncommon during the Great War. 7th Leinsters were part of 16th Irish Division in which 1st and 8th RMF also served. If you can provide your ancestor's RMF regimental number and Leinsters number (both XXXX out above??) then it may be possible to find out which RMF battalion he served with prior to transfer to the Leinsters. Jackyboy Posted 3 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 3 January , 2019 Thank you very much for such a quick reply. His numbers were as follows: Regiment: Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians) Battalion: 7th Battalion Regimental Number: 18005 Type of Casualty: Killed in action Theatre of War: Western European Theatre Comments: Formerly 7976, Royal Munster Fusiliers. Hopefully that will work this time.

Jackyboy Posted 4 January , 2019 Author Share Posted 4 January , 2019 Thanks for your reply, you're right as regards Michael, I suppose I need to try and track his service record through both numbers.
