Snowyred Posted 3 January , 2019 Share Posted 3 January , 2019 Out of interest is there any documented evidence as to the route and type of transport used to move new recruits from the Clyde in Scotland to HMS Crystal Palace in London. Im trying to piece together the movements of an ancestor. During Oct 1914. Thanks

horatio2 Posted 3 January , 2019 Share Posted 3 January , 2019 I see no alternative to railway. I have oral evidence of Newcastle recruits to the RNVR (at HMS CALLIOPE) being "...bundled away on the train down to Crystal Palace." from Newcastle station. They travelled "...in an ordinary suit..." as they were not kitted out in CALLIOPE. There were about 200 ratings in this batch of recruits in mid-September 1914. Admin DavidOwen Posted 3 January , 2019 Admin Share Posted 3 January , 2019 I have a RNR Trawler Skipper who was paid expenses of 3d to go to Grimsby Railway station for onward transport. So agree with colleagues above.
