Border Regt Officers Collar Dogs

Quick question for the group. In looking at photographs of officers in the Border Regiment, their collar insignia looks almost to be exactly the same as their cap badge, just in silver versus bronzed. They are much larger than later ones. Can anyone confirm the characteristics of the collar dogs for the Great War era?

Affectionately know as 'soup plates' in their day these badges were roughly the same size as the cap badge, such badges were considered too large for the uniform and a small version was introduced, the diamond cut star was replaced by a laurel wreath and the crown was omitted.

Just to back up Jay’s explanation I enclose an OSD cap badge that exemplifies how large the OSD collar badges of the same size were and thus how difficult to fit on the collar.

So is this a VB, Militia or a TF collar badge?

 

Smaller than a cap with 2 lugs.

A quite rare badge and according to Churchill (collar badge guru) “reputed” to have been worn by the 4th TF Battalion only.  Apparently worn until 1939.  The differential was the full garter inscription, the 5th Battalion having South Africa instead.  Both, being in place of the regular’s, Arroyos Dos Molinos.
